Toni Kasim, a dear friend (to many), passed away this morning of cancer complications. I attended the funeral. It was a warm, clear morning, surrounded by other mourners. Cried at the entrance of the mosque as pallbearers carried her remains past me out to the hearse. Watched as she was lowered into the ground and covered with orange earth. She was only 41.
It was a heartbreaking day. It still feels unreal.
I may not have known all aspects of her, for she was so many things to so many people. In the short five or so years that I've known her, she taught me how important it is to always fight and defend everyone's right to love, joy and happiness. And I will never forget this because it's impossible to forget Toni.
